Curing with Shrinkage-Reducing Admixtures Beyond drying shrinkage reduction

چکیده

Shrinkage of concrete, along with the cracking that often accompanies it, has been a continual concern of the concrete construction community.1,2 In the past 20 years or so, numerous shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs) have been developed with the goal of reducing drying shrinkage and delaying or preventing cracking.2-6 Most SRAs function by reducing the surface tension of the pore solution in the concrete. In addition to reducing or slowing drying shrinkage, this reduction in surface tension can also potentially reduce autogenous shrinkage in mortars and concretes with low water-binder ratios as well as reduce evaporative water loss during earlyage curing.6,7 In this article, a consistent theoretical basis for these reductions is presented along with example results illustrating the use of SRAs as potential curing compounds.

Influence of Shrinkage-Reducing Admixtures on Early-Age Properties of Cement Pastes

Because most shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs) significantly reduce the surface tension of a cement paste pore solution, they will naturally influence all physical properties and processes that are dependent in some way on surface tension. Such properties include internal relative humidity, capillary stresses, and freezing point depression, all via the Kelvin equation and its variants (Kelvi...

Some Issues of Shrinkage-Reducing Admixtures Application in Alkali-Activated Slag Systems

Significant drying shrinkage is one of the main limitations for the wider utilization of alkali-activated slag (AAS). Few previous works revealed that it is possible to reduce AAS drying shrinkage by the use of shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs). However, these studies were mainly focused on SRA based on polypropylene glycol, while as it is shown in this paper, the behavior of SRA based on 2-...

Capitalizing on Self-desiccation for Autogenous Distribution of Chemical Admixtures

For many concretes and mortars, self-desiccation results in the creation of empty capillary porosity within the cement paste microstructure, accompanied by a decrease in achieved hydration, an increase in internal stresses, and an increased propensity for early age cracking. One solution to this problem for low water-to-cement ratio concretes where external curing is ineffective has been the de...

Internal Curing of High-Performance Blended Cement Mortars:

In the twenty-first century, most high-performance concretes, and many other ordinary concretes, are now based on blended cements that contain silica fume, slag, and/or fly ash additions. Because the chemical shrinkage accompanying the pozzolanic and hydraulic reactions of these mineral admixtures is generally much greater than that accompanying conventional portland cement hydration, these ble...

RILEM TECHNICAL COMMITTEE RILEM draft recommendation: TC-242-MDC multi-decade creep and shrinkage of concrete: material model and structural analysis* Model B4 for creep, drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage of normal and high-strength concretes with multi-decade applicability

In response to the continuously advancing concrete technology, a new prediction model for creep and shrinkage is presented. This model, named B4, builds on the theoretically justified model B3, which is a RILEM recommendation from 1996. Improvements to the model allow for enhanced multi-decade prediction, distinguish between the drying and autogenous shrinkage, and introduce new equations and p...
